Orthopoxvirus monkeypox Clade II

Definition

Based on the virus genome sequence there are two clades/variants of the Orthopoxvirus monkeypox recognised; Clade I and Clade II. Additionally, it was agreed that the Clade II consists of two subclades; Clade IIa and Clade IIb, with the latter referring primarily to the group of variants largely circulating in the 2022 global outbreak. Monkeypox virus has been renamed to Orthopoxvirus monkeypox by the ICTV in 2024.
