Congenital toxoplasmosis

Definition

Congenital toxoplasmosis is caused by the transmission of the parasite Toxoplasma gondii from an infected mother to her fetus during pregnancy. Domestic cats are a common source of the organism. This Infection can occur during the duration of the pregnancy, or during labor or delivery. Many early infected fetuses are born prematurely and show evidence of damage to the eyes, skin, nervous system, and ears.
