Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

Definition

an exaggerated systemic response to ovarian stimulation characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical and laboratory manifestations. It is classified as mild, moderate or severe according to the degree of abdominal distention, ovarian enlargement and respiratory, hemodynamic and metabolic complications. Mild: Mild abdominal discomfort with ovaries less than 5 cm and no medical intervention other than observation and ""pelvic rest"" are required. Moderate: Moderate abdominal discomfort and or other symptoms of ascites, no hemoconcentation (Hct < 45) with either ovary between 5-10 cm in size. Severe: Severe abdominal discomfort and/or other symptoms of ascites, hemoconcentration (Hct >45) and/or other serious biochemical abnormalities requiring hospitalization for observation and/or for medical intervention (paracentesis, detorsion, other,....)".
