Dermatitis or eczema of external ear

Definition

Dermatitis and eczema affecting the skin of the external auditory canal, pinna and retroauricular sulcus. It is often complicated by or is a complication of infection by organisms including Staphylococcus aureus, Candida spp. and Pseudomonas spp. It may be a component of constitutional eczema (seborrhoeic and atopic) and is frequently complicated by contact with irritants or by the development of contact allergy.
